Many kinds of steel exist, but it’s mainly the addition of chromium that makes some steel stainless.
The chromium combines with oxygen in the environment to form an extremely thin, nearly invisible, stable film that protects against further corrosion.
And if the surface is scratched, more film will immediately form, protecting the exposed area.
By contrast, ordinary steel reacts with oxygen to form the reddish, relatively unstable film we call rust, which continues to grow.
