Kitchen sinks get a lot of use.

Among kitchen sinks, those made with stainless steel and porcelain are durable options. Stainless steel sinks last 15 to 30 years, while porcelain has a lifespan of 25 to 30 years. No matter which material you choose, proper care and maintenance will make your sink last longer.

Stainless Steel

Get the most longevity from a stainless steel sink by installing one with a low gauge number. The lower the gauge, the thicker the steel and the longer it will last. Use only nonabrasive cleaners on stainless steel, and avoid cleansers containing chloride compounds. Never use steel wool or abrasive materials. The continuous dropping of silverware and dishes into the sink can scratch it, but a satin or brushed finish will camouflage these blemishes.

Porcelain

Porcelain sinks have a cast iron core with a baked-on porcelain finish. Because chipping and scratching of the finish shortens the sink's life, placing a stainless steel rack or soft mat in the sink's bottom can prevent chipping if a knife or dish falls into the sink. Never allow coffee grounds or other acidic materials to sit in the sink. Rinse and dry the sink after each use and clean the porcelain often, avoiding abrasive cleansers, rough sponges and steel wool. Consider having the sink refinished if the finish sustains numerous scratches and chips.

Discoloration and stains dull the shine of chrome fixtures.
The clean lines and bright shine of chrome complements most sink designs. Stains, water spots and tarnish can cause discoloration that doesn't wipe off with normal cleaning. Breaking down the minerals present in water spots and dissolving stains and tarnish requires deep cleaning. Harsh abrasives, including scouring pads and powders, can leave behind small scratches that dull the chrome finish. Gentler cleaners work well when used properly.

1

Fill a small bowl with hot water. Stir in one or two squirts of liquid dish soap.

2

Wet a rag in the soapy water. Wipe down the entire faucet fixture assembly with the soapy water, removing as much surface dirt as possible.

3

Dip an old toothbrush into the soapy water. Scrub stubborn stains from the chrome with the toothbrush. The toothbrush provides minor abrasion that won't scratch the chrome, while allowing you to clean out tight corners and joints on the fixture. Rinse the faucet with clear water.

4

Combine equal parts water and white vinegar if some discoloration remains. Wipe down the faucet with the solution. Use the toothbrush and vinegar solution to remove stains around the faucet base. For stubborn water spots, soak the rag in the solution then lay it over the faucet. Wait five minutes so the vinegar can loosen the spots, and then wipe the faucet clean.

5

Rinse the faucet assembly with clear water and wipe dry. Buff the chrome with silver polish to bring back its shine and remove any remaining discoloration.

Things You Will Need

  • Bowl
  • Dish soap
  • Rags
  • Old toothbrush
  • Vinegar
  • Silver polish

Tip

  • Dry the faucet after each use to prevent future stains.

Scouring makes an old sink look new again.
You can improve the appearance of your kitchen quickly by scouring the sink until it sparkles. Most sinks have a porcelain or stainless steel surface. Coffee, tea, tomato juice and food residue can leave behind stains on porcelain, while stainless is more prone to discoloration from water marks and food residue. Both porcelain and stainless sinks can scratch easily when cleaned with overly abrasive materials, which ruins the finish. Proper scouring requires mild abrasives that don't scratch but still cut through the dirt.

1

Wet the interior of the sink with hot tap water. Wipe out any dirt or grime with a moistened cleaning rag.

2

Sprinkle baking soda or a mild scouring powder on the moistened cleaning rag. Avoid highly abrasive scouring powders and wire scrubbers, as these can scratch the surface of metal and porcelain sinks.

3

Scrub the sink with the rag. Add more soda or scouring powder as necessary until the entire sink surface is scoured.

4

Apply baking soda or scouring powder directly on remaining stains, such as tea or coffee stains. Moisten the rag and scrub the stains a second time.

5

Rinse the sink out with clear water. Baking soda and scouring powder leave behind a white haze if they aren't completely rinsed away.

Things You Will Need

  • Cleaning rag
  • Scouring powder or baking soda

Tip

  • Wet a paper towel in chlorine bleach and lay it over stains in porcelain sinks if scouring doesn't completely remove them. Leave the towel in place for 15 minutes, then rinse the sink with clear water.
  • You also can clean chrome and metal faucets with scouring powder or baking soda. Scouring abrasives might scratch plastic faucets, so use only soapy water for these.

After a thorough re-graining and polishing, your sink will shine like new.

Sharp utensils and regular use cause scratches, stains and general wear and tear on once-pristine stainless steel kitchen sinks. Each stainless steel sink has its own hairline grain – typically a brushed grain finish – which brings attention to scratches that run in an opposing direction. Refinishing old sinks essentially entails re-graining the surface to create a new, uniform pattern. This painless process remedies general age and surface scratches. If your sink is badly damaged, consider enlisting a professional who specializes in fabricating or polishing stainless steel.

1. Notice the direction of the grain of your stainless steel sink – always follow the direction of this grain when cleaning or sanding your sink.

2. Clean the sink thoroughly. Spray a microfiber cloth with an ammonia-based household glass cleaner and scrub the sink free of fingerprints and grease. Dampen a nylon sponge with distilled white vinegar and scrub away stains and lime deposits.

3. Secure 240-grit sandpaper to a sanding block. Sand the surface of the sink in long, even strokes, following the sink's grain in one direction. Overlap the edges of your strokes by 1 to 2 inches.

4. Rinse the sink free of sanding dust. Allow it to dry and then sand the surface once again. This time, secure a coarse-grit abrasive pad to the sanding block. Rinse the sink, let it dry and do one more pass with a fine-grit abrasive pad.

5. Clean the sink once again with distilled white vinegar and a nylon pad.

6. Buff the sink with a stainless steel cleaner and microfiber cloth. Follow the manufacturer's directions and clean in the direction of the grain.

7. Apply a few drops of baby oil to the sink for a final shine. Wipe the sink dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

Things You Will Need

  • Household glass cleaner with ammonia
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Nylon cleaning pad
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Sanding block
  • 240-grit sandpaper
  • Coarse-grit abrasive pad
  • Fine-grit abrasive pad
  • Stainless steel cleaner
  • Baby oil

  • Tips

  • If fine, 240-grit sandpaper seems to have some effect on removing scratches but doesn't quite do the trick, use higher-grit sandpaper.
  • Use a custom sink grid to protect your refinished sink from future scratches.

  • Warnings

  • Don't let household cleaners such as bleach rest in your sink, as they'll stain the finish.
  • Do not sand your sink with metal abrasives such as steel wool.
